| Born 1959 in Hirosaki, Japan. Lives and works in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.
Yoshitomo Nara had an extraordinarily lonely childhood. He spent long periods on his own, drawing endlessly and watching Japanese anime and American cartoons and, during his teenage years, developed a passion for rock'n'roll and punk music. These early preoccupations continue to influence his work, which also has affinities with Manga and the Japanese cult of kawaii, or cuteness. |
"My characters are all self-portraits in a way. But the emotions that I feel can, of course, be universal. Often the characters are representations of me but they are also representations of the countless others who identify with them." |
